Vision Update

19 Weeks

My nurse practitioner called and said it sounds like I’m having the beginnings of migraines due to surges of hormones - ! Wow. She advised that my mid-morning snack be a protein and if that doesn’t help, to call back.

I hope that’s the case and really hope one of these migraines never blossoms to the full thing. I rarely get headaches. I remember a period when Dad, Stephanie and Katherine would get them. I think everyone got beyond them for the most part. Scary!

Epic Mulch Pile

I love our house. It has it’s issues, but it’s built fairly well [unlike our last cheaply made home] and I love the layout, coziness and privacy. The only thing this house does not have for me is a flat walk-out back yard. Our lot is lovely yet really landscaped and hilly.

The first spring we held off doing anything. The previous owners obviously had neglected keeping on top of the landscaping, close to looking badly. There hasn’t been new mulch in probably 3 or more years. Because there is a LOAD of it. This lot is probably more beds than actual grass, which is patchy.

Tim and I decided to pick a few main spots to focus on this year since we cannot afford to do the entire lot. How expensive? Try TWENTY cubic yards. Visuals below for scale. Most people we know max out at like 8. We are convinced we do not have enough, I’m not exaggerating.

As of now - assuming the weather, Dear Lord, holds hour - we’re paying the three nephews to come help Tim out. Tim was going to start a dent in this behemoth so that I could get my car smoothly out of the driveway. So since most of the chores were out of the way and the weather was nice, this 19-week old preggers grabbed a mini-rake to spread mulch while Nora napped! We actually got a few small bits done which felt like a huge accomplishment and we guess we moved about 5 cubic yards.

The neighbors always tell us how the previous owners barely mowed their grass, so I constantly remind Tim that even if he did half of what he thinks he needs, it’s still better than what was happening here previously!

To note: Nora hates the mulch pile. She watched the truck dump it and when we took her out to see it she said it smelled and she started shaking! She asked to be taken inside! I guess a combination of the size and smell is too much for her familiar territory. She even told Amy & Chris about it up until this past morning. Who’dve guess?

Hoping for clear weather next Sunday!

Now that’s better.

Better bed, patchy grass : (

20. Cubic. Yards.

A dent.

A dirt bed.

Part of what will be tackled with nephews.

Pseudo Date Night

I say pseudo because our ideal date night would be a dinner out where I can drink, followed by a concert of some sort. Tim and I are also strategic about when to use our Moms [and sis-in-law Amy] for Nora and don’t want to abuse the advantage to having both parents close. So when a good friend’s 40th birthday party was being held at Horseshoe Casino, I could have probably stayed home and have Tim support Team Kron, but Mama doesn’t get out much and I wanted to see friends. We would never go to a casino if it wasn’t someone else’s event.

We were also missing our annual Loveland Rat Race 5K which we were actually bummed about - it’s our favorite 5K with a great atmosphere and after party. I’m really building up our night, huh?

We picked up two other Dad friends who didn’t have a babysitter set and my lady counterparts stayed home. Not many of us are gamblers, so I think their choices were solid. This just goes to show how much I enjoy and love Rick to go out 19 weeks pregnant and not gamble to show my love for him on his 40th : )

We walked across the over-stimulating floor where I spied my youngest sister, Katherine, dealing Black Jack and gave an apologetic wave. I don’t get to see her often based on our schedules, and it’s probably not a good idea to plop down at her table and start a conversation. She was off at 8pm before we were out from dinner and she’s not allowed on the floor after a shift - yowsers.

The nicest part of dinner at Margaritaville in the casino was the camaraderie. The service wasn’t great, the average food was overpriced, and a “carnivale” girl on stilts hovered over our table way too long making balloon hats that no one wanted to wear nor keep hearing every 5 minutes pop in our ears.

We moved to the Diamond Lounge around 8:45pm. A friend of a friend is a Diamond Player [not sure how much that costs!] so we used that card to hide away in a calmer, darker place with lots of chairs and cheap drinks. It was nice and we could visit and still no one made a move to gamble until about 11pm, when I left with Tim and the two other men. None of them minded at all.

I was asleep by midnight which I haven’t seen since 2013. And of course, like Murphy’s Law, though presented with the opportunity to sleep in, I totally could not. Awake by 7am - Doh!

Tim and I picked up some bagels and donuts for the Kieffers for taking such great care of Nora. It’s such an uplifting coming to pick up your child and the delight in their face to see you! Nora had a great time and she slept until 7am for them! Thanks again to them for allowing Tim and I to have our pseudo date.

Vision Side Effects?

Yesterday was the 3rd time in about 2 months that I’ve had what I’ll call double vision [?]. It’s happened twice at work while in front of my computer. It’s hard to describe, like an eye floater that “grows” in my vision, then dissipates. A bit of a a spacey/foggy feeling with it.

It happened yesterday and manifested as a foggy/spacey feeling. I couldn’t focus, and tried to lay down for a bit which I guess kind of helped. It went away after about 2-3 hours but left a barely noticeable dull headache.

I know some vision stuff is possible with pregnancies, but it’s kind of freaking me out. Side effect of pregnancy or the fact that I haven’t had my eyes checked since I was 28. I do tend to have lower blood pressure which some friends wonder if that’s linked. I even go too far and think about brain glitches… I know, calm down. Can’t help it!

I left a VM with my office so hopefully they’ll get ahold of me Monday to advise me. Fingers crossed.

Easter 2014

Easter weekend was probably the most beautiful Easter weekend I can imagine in years. Between lower and mid 70s all weekend - amazing. Saturday was our day with the Kron family. We had the annual Easter egg hunt which is probably more for Nora nowadays as the nephews are getting older. Though Pawpaw likes to be tricky with some hiding spots for them.

Krons new deck!

Kron/Kieffer Cousins & Sammie

Nora had a blast then I swiped and hid all her candy since I think she’s too young to eat it : ) The family’s good friend Annie was there with her little boy, Sammie, who is 2 1/2 - he and Nora got along, though I think Nora was too busy being busy to stop and say anything. The child ran around the backyard all. day. long. She barely stopped to eat food.

All. Day. Long.

Unfortunately in the party setting, there’s no way Nora will go to sleep for a nap. So when 3:30 rolled around and she fell and scraped her knee, it was extra dramatic because she was utterly tired. The ride home was too short for a real nap, so girlfriend was a zombie the rest of the day. We basically let her veg on the couch with some Three Little Pigs until bath and bed.

Sunday my parents came over, so it was very low key and casual. We made jerk [organic, free range] chicken, vegetables and a pearl couscous salad. I was pretty proud of my menu! Nora even enjoyed the jerk veggies which her goatee proves. Thank you again to my parents for coming down. If we’d gone up there, it would have been an entire weekend of no naps, so we were glad Nora got a regular 2 hours on Sunday. We were able to sit outside and have a great visit!

Pearl Coucous with cranberries and arugula - bon appetit!

Nora liked the veggies!

My Dad won’t admit his soft spot for the animal in the house.

Easter night we were lazy and thought we could find something to order in. I ran to Hot Head Burritos, Chipotle and Jets Pizza - everything was closed! I didn’t realize Easter closed down so much fast food too. We finally put our heads on straight and used the jerk chicken for some soft tacos which were fantastic.

Takin’ Care of Business

17 Weeks

The week started rough.

Home:
Our new hired tax folk waited until the last minute to ask questions and file us. Really not cool since we submitted back in February. They had finally sent a confirmation email at 8:30 the night before taxes were due and wanted us to fax them back. Yes, let me pull out my fax machine from my rear. I emailed the owner my disappointment and he admitted it was poor on their part. Not again.

Work:
So on top of being completely stressed out Monday night over taxes, I knew I had to wake up at 4am for a flight to Boston with one of my bosses to meet with new clients. I made it to CVG fine, the flight was very bumpy - we rode on the cold front that came this past week.

The meeting was fine. My boss admitted I probably didn't need to go - nice. However, I’m new and I need to make those small sacrifices. Our meeting went long and Boss had another client call, so we missed our late lunch reservation.

In a strange coincidence, we were there on the 1-year anniversary of the Boston Marathon Bombing. Our lunch reservation was down on Newbury St, so it was probably good we missed it with the memorial services going on.

We at lunch around 3pm in the airport. Since I’d barely had food, I stuffed myself with a lobster wrap and fries. Very good, I ate too much. I got indigestion so the flight was not great. More turbulence. About 1 hour in I thought “I might puke.” Then my mouth started watering. Ignoring the buckle-up light, I made my way to the bathroom and seriously almost threw up. Somehow it passed as did the indigestion. Hot pregger mess.

Thankfully I got home at 8:30pm so I was able to get a full night’s sleep.

Pregnancy:
Monday I had my 16 [really 17] week appointment - it was pretty straightforward, I heard the baby’s heartbeat again - this week it was around 130-140 range. We go back Wed, May 7th to find out the gender! Eeeeee! Once we hit that mark, I’ll probably put more focus into getting ready.

I tried to find a maternity swimsuit at Target today. Between Nora’s swim lessons and going to the Sharonville pool with Nana, I’m going to need something I can wear with Nora that won’t pull off. You know what’s worse than swimsuit shopping? Maternity swimsuit shopping. Thankfully I’d put in an order with OldNavy.com so hopefully something in that shipment will work out.

Today [Friday] I’ve hit my limit on my regular jeans. Wah-waaahhhh. You know what? I forgot how comfortable maternity jeans are. Elastic for the win! Thank you again to Emma for the communal maternity clothes! I can’t remember how long I lasted last pregnancy - 18 weeks [tomorrow] seems like a good run for pregnancy #2.

Nora:
I don’t think I’ve seen Nora as high-pitched excited as Wednesday after the sitters - swim lessonssss! Tim and I sat and watched while Nora went straight to Miss Emma. They blew bubbles, went after the duckies, and jumped off the side until sadly our 15 minutes was up.

Me:
We got a pleasant surprise last week with a day off today. My last day off was late January between jobs - I was very ready. No, I did not spend the day with Nora. I took her to the sitter so I could get. stuff. done
- grocery shopping
- washed and vacuumed car
- bought Tim’s b-day gift
- Target of course
- planted herbs and flowers
- cleaned house
- online yoga

A lot for pregnant lady, but I had to take advantage of today since Easter weekend is a wash for anything else productive. Though I am looking forward to all the family time!

Happiness is 70-degree Weather

17 Weeks

I think most of us in the midwest can agree this weekend was utterly gorgeous. 70s - perfect.

Friday was an intense day at work; tight deadline that we worked to the last minute. The client review was mediocre. My brain was done at 3:30 and I just wanted a drink. Blergh. Instead I down sweets.

Saturday Tim ran while Nora and I played with sidewalk chalk outside. While Nora napped Tim and I rushed to get the house together for two families coming over for dinner. Great weather, great friends, great night. Nora and Ava are 3 months apart and truly enjoy each other - they actually played together instead of next to each other; ring-around-the-rosie, running and squealing and lots of pretending while the men acted as “dragons.”

“So I told my Mom…”

With magic wands in hand

This morning I met with my doula, Anna, in Northside where she lives. Since she was my doula with Nora, our meeting was brief, yet nice. It was maybe 15 minutes and we’ll meet one more time before delivery. It wasn’t really a question this time around - I felt the benefit of having a 3rd level-headed party during labor and delivery is so valuable - the ability to tell us when to leave for the hospital pays for her costs alone. She provides physical and emotional support but cannot perform medical care like a midwife.

When I returned, Daddy & Nora had had a trying morning of accidents in the big-girl underwear. We tried it out all morning and Nora did fairly well. If she had dry panties after “X” amount of time, we gave her some puffed corn. I don’t want to force anyone caring for Nora to do the dirty work, so we’ll see how far we can get on the weekends.

I got in a run before Nora’s nap time [during which time Nora had another accident with Tim in the big-girl panties]. I was aiming for 6 miles, but wasn’t feeling it with the heat and backed down to 5 miles, walking up the last hill. I was good and listened to my body.

We spent post-nap at Sharon Woods where every other family in Sharonville was as well! Thankfully it’s a large enough park, we didn’t feel smothered.

I’d given Nora some cashews in the car on our way to Sharon Woods and she finished off a few on our way to dinner. While sitting in LaRosas, I noticed her skin seemed extra blotchy. It wasn’t that hot out and she’d had some water - we realized it looked like hives and was probably caused by the cashews which she rarely has; and had quite a few tonight.

The hives have eased up, but now we’re obviously staying away!

Hives mainly on left side of face.

Boo.

Our Guppy!

After weeks of communication to sign up, we made it to our first swim lesson at the Miami Athletic Club in Milford! It’s a small community health center, not big and swanky like the chains. Based on our schedules, we went with private 6pm on Wednesdays. Private was only $15 more and 15 minutes long!

I had zero expectations going in - Nora would either love it or hate it.

Nora came into the pool for me easily. I held her while Miss Emma [maybe 19?] asked Nora to blow bubbles and catch a rubber ducky she’s toss around the water.

After maybe a minute or two, Emma asked Nora if she’d come with her - Nora went very willingly. They blew bubbles, “swam” after rubber duckies, Nora laid back on Emma while Emma pulled her around. Nora had a purple and yellow pool stick that she alternated “pushing” out to start her arms in a paddle movement. Nora also got out of the pool with help and jumped to Emma a handful of times.

Nora was very sad to leave the pool! Last night she was upset because she wanted to go swimming!

Tim and I are glad we’ve started this with her - something different and a new experience rather than her usual weekly schedule!

Oh, Nora.

I know most parents think their child is unique... we are those parents. Nora really is... funny. I assume all 2-year olds are.

This past Sunday we went to the park where Nora refused to play on the 2-5 year old equipment. So we dodged 8-year olds who could care less if Nora was in their way. She would jog up to kids playing in the sand and just stand in front of them and stare. She wanted to ride on the physically challenged swing [which is essentially a big plastic lounger]. No un-abled children were there so we let her for a bit. For 10 minutes she sat in that thing and just stared at all the children around her.

This past weekend she stationed herself outside the bathroom door while Tim was in there and said in her “dragon” voice, “I’m gonna get your pooooo-pooooo!” - WTH?

I believe it was the same day when she went into the fridge [because she can now] and went after one of my yogurts, only to drop it and have it explode all over her. We couldn’t NOT laugh.

Nora has also talked about the babies [plural] inside me; her brother and sister. Not cool.

I came home last night in the middle of a pretty bad tantrum which started because Tim made Nora stop “driving” his car in the driveway. She’d thrown her crayons, so she was in timeout. I asked her, “What do you say to Daddy?” She sat on the ottoman, hands on her cheeks, “Let me think....”

What a goober.

16 Weeks

Nora has been a hoot lately, I’ll have to report on that in the next post.

Right now I have a cold and feeling sluggish, so I’m just posting a 16-week belly photo.

I’ve been feeling flutters on the upper right part of my belly which I dismissed for gas [??] but now wondering if I’ve actually been feeling the baby - ! I cross-referenced my Nora posts and I think I was feeling movement at 20 weeks with her.
