Sister Photo

For my Mom’s birthday, my sisters and I got together to take a photo and include Nora [Tim unfortunately had to work that night]. They came out great [and made Mom cry - which isn’t too hard to do] and Nora was able to enjoy a little bit of fun time with her Aunts!

The Sporting Life

I had to bring in an old photo of myself to work to share which was a great excuse to go through all my old photo albums... remember those? Albums? I found all my old sports teams’ photos; 7th & 8th grade basketball [never really liked], 7th, 8th & 9th grade volleyball [actually liked and was a setter] and 10th, 11th & 12th grade tennis [really liked and wished I’d played freshman year, too]. I came across this gem of a photo - my junior year tennis photo - awkward anyone?

I remember running a bit in college with Stephanie here and there, but not even sure we went very far - ? Then after becoming engaged, some kind of health switch went off and that’s when the running clicked into gear. I realized splitting meal in half with Tim wasn’t exactly a healthy idea [along with fettuccine Alfredo dinners].

I think most runners always remember saying “I’ll never be a runner,” and 3 years later they’re running half marathons. Training is a great goal I like to set for myself once or twice a year... and while it gets tedious the closer I get to race time, I’m always so happy after running and love seeing how far I can push myself. Saturday was one of those days!

Saturday was my “peak day” - the most miles I’ll run before the Half Pig in 2 weeks which was 12. I got to bed before 10:30 and had hydrated before bed [after a glass of wine - come on - it was Friday night!]. Those 12 miles actually felt pretty good and I felt I could have even gone the whole 13.1 race length - such a great feeling!

Saturday night we’d already registered for the Loveland Rat Race - a really fun, flat 5K with music, beer and food afterwards. I wasn’t sure whether I’d run... it seemed that wouldn’t be a good idea. However, the runner’s head sees the challenge and I went for it. The atmosphere was so fun and our friends were with us with babies too.

William & Evelyn - Emma was up front to rock the 5K without Evelyn in her belly like last year : )

I ran the first mile with Nora in the jogger stroller, Tim flew with Nora the 2nd mile [jerk is faster with the jogger than I am without it], and I let Tim rock out the 3rd mile while I took Nora again. Running with a jogger is HARD. My body wanted to stop and walk with Nora but my head would not let me. That’s my mental rule: I can run as slow as I want, just don’t stop.

As I approached the finish line I heard a spectator yell, “Good job, Mom! 100 yards left!” It was rather encouraging for a little 5K.

The post food and beer was so satisfying and again, a very fun atmosphere. We think we’ll do this race annually and maybe one year Nora will run with us!

Nora was a good sport and enjoyed her ride!

The family that runs together, stays together : )

Running with a heavy heart

I had planned on running last night already. After the Boston news, I really wanted to run last night. I have feelings of anger and sadness, not just as a human with a heart, but as a runner.

Lots of feelings coursed through me yesterday and a friend articulated those feelings on her own site - I hope she doesn’t mind if I share:

Love and support to the runners, families and supporters who were there.

Productive Saturday

We love our new house - however, the “yard” - which is mostly landscaping - will be a little more maintenance. The previous owner had become a divorcee, so I can’t blame her for letting it fall to the wayside.

Nana graciously took Nora on Saturday/Saturday night so Tim and I could focus on cleaning up the yard. After dropping Nora off, we pulled up to the house and the delivery truck for our dining room table was waiting for us - wow! Deliveries never come at the beginning of your slotted window! The table fits well in the space and we’re happy to have a place for people to sit while eating now!

The first tackle of the day was the [too] tall ornamental grass that flanks the driveway entrance. Thankfully we have an old hedge trimmer from my Dad so the job was fairly easy. We found the middle of the larger bunch was definitely a home for a mid-sized animal because it had been flatted with two “hallways” and two “rooms” inside the grass - wow!

We had at least two neighbors comment on how great it is that we trimmed down the grass for safety purposes - ! Which is true, it was hard to see beyond the grass leaving the driveway, as well for those who come around the road.

Tim spent the rest of the day [about 12-6pm!] blowing leaves and mowing. I spend the rest of the day fixing small items and getting all my herbs and flowers planted, and cleaned the entire house. Productivity!

I made our cutoff 6pm to get cleaned up. We went to MJ’s restaurant in downtown Milford - we were expecting a bit of a local’s bar/grille and were pleasantly surprised that it was a little more contemporary with awesome food and a great craft beer selection. We were done by 8pm and even though we were exhausted, decided we’d better take advantage of our rare date night and went down to the Milford Inn for one beer. Much more “local” bar feeling and still had a great craft beer selection [the Eastside really delivers on the drinks!].

We were home and in our PJs by 9pm after a marathon day! Thanks again Nana for letting us get so much work done - and a date night to boot!

Feels so good to sit!

Roseola : (

16 Months, Week 1

Nora had a fever a week ago Tuesday that peaked around 103 with no other symptoms than being lethargic and just wanting to snuggle. The fever and wanting to be held happened again on Saturday.

Monday I received a call from our sitter than Nora had a rash going from her neck to her torso - ! Of course I panicked, but after talking to a nurse at our pediatrician’s office, it sounded like the familiar Roseola virus : (  Nora is much better today and Nana reported a huge increase in appetite for Nora! Hopefully the rash simmers down now...

Warm Weekend

16 Months, Week 1

This past weekend was “warm” - mid 60s at best.

We went out in the afternoon to a playground down in old Milford - Nora loves being outdoors now that she can walk everywhere. She really enjoyed the slides - does NOT enjoy the swings. We’ve tried the bucket-seat-type swings and plastic-chair-type swings - no go. I think it’s the lack of security in the swings that makes her a little scared - oh man.

Nora does a pretty good job of not putting pieces of nature in her mouth... occasionally she tries to put a large rock which I can deter easily. A few other times she’ll toss in the tiny pinecones that she loves collecting in the yard : )
